Connection: how to build intentional opportunities for intimacy

The world just seems to be becoming busier. When I sit down and chat with friends, it seems that a majority of young families are carpooling kids, racing from work to other obligations and ending up exhausted at the end of the night. In exhaustion, we look to reclaim a few moments for ourselves. In the hustle of life, marriages and relationships can inadvertently take a backseat.


A lack of connection or intimacy can have various consequences. For example, if your partner has made efforts to connect with you, to enjoy you, to get to know you...it is possibly more likely that you will give them the benefit of the doubt, be more patient and be more emotionally available to receive them. In my experience, most couples don't break up over large incidents. They break up over a thousand small emotional cuts, a lack of appreciation and growing apart.



WHAT IS INTENTIONAL OPPORTUNITY FOR INTIMACY?


Intentional opportunity refers to being aware of opening the door to an 8 second kiss, a planned (and kept) date night, and prioritizing connection. Intimacy doesn’t need to mean sex...although it could. Intimacy refers to closeness and this blog speaks to fostering closeness needed for connection with those we seek to have shared meaning with.


STRATEGIES TO CREATE INTENTIONAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR INTIMACY


1. Prioritize Quality Time


Schedule Regular Date Nights: Setting aside dedicated time for each other without distractions is crucial. Whether it’s a romantic dinner, a casual outing, or a cozy night in, the key is to be fully present.


Engage in Shared Activities: Find hobbies or activities that you both enjoy. Engaging in these together can strengthen your bond and create shared memories.


Daily Check-Ins: Make it a habit to check in with each other daily, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Ask about each other’s day, listen actively, and express care and concern.


2. Communicate Openly and Honestly


Practice Active Listening: Truly listen to what the other person is saying without interrupting or planning your response. Show empathy and understanding.


Share Your Feelings: Be open about your emotions, thoughts, and needs. Vulnerability fosters deeper connections and trust.


Avoid Assumptions: Clarify misunderstandings by asking questions rather than making assumptions. This prevents miscommunication and builds a stronger understanding.

Establish Rituals: Create small daily or weekly rituals, like having morning coffee together, a weekly movie night, or a monthly adventure. These routines provide stability and anticipation.

Intimate Gestures: Small acts like a gentle kiss on the forehead, a reassuring touch on the back, or a loving squeeze of the hand can convey deep affection and connection.

Travel and Adventure: Exploring new places or trying new activities together can invigorate your relationship and create lasting memories.
